Case Study:
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia. As  one of Malaysia’s leading automotive companies, MMM is currently represented by 63 showrooms (with 8 being 4S) and 63 service centres across Malaysia. In East Malaysia, MMM has 16 showrooms (8 in Sarawak and 8 in Sabah). Additionally, there are 30 authorised Body & Repair (B&P) outlets in main cities to meet market demand.

MMM is committed to selling a range of vehicles that are high in quality, driving performance, safety, comfort, and technologically advanced. The Triton 4×4 pick-up truck is imported as CBU (Completely Built-Up) units from Thailand and the XPANDER is locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia.

The Challenge

MMM’s aging on-premises servers housed in an old facility with unstable power supply that caused frequent outages, performance bottlenecks, and long provisioning times for new environments. This not only hindered business agility but also drove up maintenance expenses. Additionally, fragmented data across multiple third-party hosting providers resulted in poor visibility and limited control over critical information. The absence of centralized governance and documentation further introduced data inconsistencies, compliance risks, and security concerns.

To overcome these limitations, MMM sought to enhance system reliability, streamline access for distributed teams, and build a robust foundation for future digital transformation initiatives including connected vehicle services and data-driven insights powered by AWS.

Why Choose Amazon Web Services?

MMM chose AWS for its proven ability to deliver secure, reliable, and highly scalable cloud solutions. Leveraging AWS’s robust global infrastructure, strong compliance standards, and broad range of innovative services, MMM found the ideal platform to power its automotive workloads and future digital initiatives. The migration was executed under the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), ensuring a smooth and compliant transition aligned with corporate policy by hosting data within in-country AWS regions.

The Services Provided

AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) framework to guide MMM through their cloud transformation journey.

In Assess Phase

  • Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA): Reviews MMM’s capabilities across 7 dimensions (business, process, people, platform, operations, security, governance). Identifies gaps and creates a strong business case for migration.

  • Cost-Benefit Analysis & Workshops: Aligns cloud migration plan with MMM’s operational needs and future growth goals.

In Mobilize Phase

  • AWS Landing Zone: Sets up secure and scalable architecture to support governance, compliance, and expansion.
  • AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM): Manages access control to protect workloads and users.
  • Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC): Provides secure network segmentation for smooth integration with existing systems.
  • AWS CloudTrail & AWS Config: Enables centralized logging, activity tracking, and compliance monitoring.
  • Migration Roadmap: Defines clear timelines, priority order, rollback plans, and risk mitigation strategies.

In Migrate & Mordernize Phase

  • Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2): Hosts core workloads on scalable and reliable compute infrastructure.
  • AWS Application Migration Service (MGN): Migrates on-prem servers to AWS with minimal downtimes and effort.
  • Amazon CloudWatch: Monitors performance and operational health of migrated workloads.
  • AWS System Manager: Automates patching, improves visibility, and ensures secure operations.
  • Phased Cutover & Testing: Reduces business disruption and ensures smooth transition.

Quantifiable Improvements

  • System availability improved to 99.99%
  • Server provisioning time dropped from 2 days to 2 hours, enabling faster delivery and improved responsiveness to business needs.
  • Maintenance workload was reduced by 50%

How did AWS Enhance Your Business?

AWS has helped MMM modernize its IT landscape, enabling a shift toward agile operations and data-driven decision-making. By streamlining the entire application lifecycle through automation and cloud-native tools, MMM can easily scale resources to support business growth, improve customer service, and explore innovations such as predictive maintenance and digital service platforms.

The Outcome

By migrating to AWS, MMM achieved greater operational agility, system uptime, and overall IT efficiency. AWS enabled the team to deploy applications faster, reduce downtime, and enhance user experience across internal and external platforms. The new cloud foundation also positioned MMM for future innovation in analytics and mobility solutions.

  • Data Centre Exit: Successfully decommissioned aging on-premises infrastructure, reducing physical IT overhead and maintenance costs. By offloading workloads to the AWS Cloud, MMM gained greater agility, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Improved agility & scalability: Gained the ability to quickly scale infrastructure up or down based on business demand.
  • Enhanced data ownership: Achieved centralized control and full ownership of business-critical data on AWS.
  • Stronger security posture: Leveraged AWS-native security tools (IAM, KMS, Security Hub) to enhance compliance and protection.
  • Operational efficiency: Reduced time spent on server maintenance and patching through automation tools like AWS Systems Manager.
  • Real-time monitoring & visibility: Gained proactive operational insights using CloudWatch and AWS Config.
  • Business continuity: Enabled high availability and disaster recovery, minimizing risks of unplanned outages.
  • Cost optimization: Shifted from CAPEX to OPEX model, paying only for what is used and avoiding hardware investments.
  • Landing Zone: Established a centralized and secure environment to manage AWS workloads efficiently, ensuring consistent governance, compliance, and scalability across all deployments.

Was AWS Involved in the Project?

Yes. The project was delivered in close collaboration with AWS and G-AsiaPacific (GAP), an AWS Premier Partner.

AWS Account Manager Farena played a key role in ensuring the success of the migration, demonstrating dedication and attention to detail throughout every stage of the project. She actively supported Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia by coordinating resources, providing timely guidance, and introducing GAP as the implementation partner.

Partner Success Manager Mei Yin contributed from a strategic perspective, helping align the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) with MMM’s business objectives. Meanwhile, Solution Architects Dominic and Yong Jun provided technical expertise to design and optimize the cloud architecture, ensuring a seamless and efficient migration to AWS.
